After the conference, the project Manager of TAFU, Nyanzi Fredrick stopped at Sydney where he was warmly welcomed at the Botany Respite Centre where he gained many activity ideas, saw older people enjoy themselves and joined in the fun. At the beautiful Montefiore Aged Care Facility, he was given a wonderful tour and found everyone content and happy to be there. At Concord Hospital he learnt about outpatients and the aged care ward and met the designer of the NNOPU website, Joe Stewart.

The project Manager of TAFU, Nyanzi Fredrick attended the 10th International Federation on Ageing Conference in Melbourne, Australia. Nyanzi presented a paper on the theme From Advocacy to Policy and Ageing in Uganda.
Nyanzi also attended a workshop on Age Friendly Cities and was able to have formal discusions with notable international Experts in the field of ageing such as: Dr. John Beard from Word Health Organisation, Department of Ageing and Life Course; Dr. Alexandre Sidorenko, Global Ambassador; Mark Gorman, Director of Strategic Development, Help Age International; Sylivia Beales, Head of Strategic Alliances Help Age International; Ken Bluestone, International Influencing Advisor, Age UK; Prof Joseph Troise, Director of International Institute on Ageing, United Nationa Malta.
Prof Bob Cumming University of Sydney Australia, developed an electronic poster on TAFU's work that was viewed at the conference.

The second meeting of Befrienders was held at Moonland Gardens Nsambya General clinic. The number of befrienders rose from eight to seventeen. Befrienders noted that they are developing stronger attachments to the isolated older persons.
On the same day, TAFU held its Annual General Meeting.

Through the advocacy work of TAFU and NNOPU organisations, the Minister of Eldery and Disability, Hon Sulaiman Madada launched the National Policy of the Older Persons at Namutumba.http://www.mglsd.go.ug/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/National%20Policy%20for%20Older%20Persons.pdf
TAFU and NNOPU must now advocate for the implementation of the policy in order to improve the plight of the older persons of Uganda. Tasks include senstising the public, the donor community, Ministries, local councils, Electoral Commission and policy makers on how to implement the policy of the older persons.

Eight new Befrienders met with TAFU staff to review their involvement in the Programme. They noted that the older persons they had visited had multiple problems. TAFU reassured the volunteers that they were not expected to solve all the problems but that visiting in itself benefited the older person. TAFU will document the needs raised by the volunteers and use the information when seekinf funding.

Luweero Kasana Catholic Diocese donated a grain milling machine to the older persons of Sekamuli village in Luweero Bamunenika County to be managed by TAFU.
The older persons can have their grains milled at half the price and use the residue husks for feeding their chickens and pigs.

Commissioner for Disability and Elderly, Herbert Baryayebwa was pleased to report on the release of the National Policy for Older Persons of Uganda but urged member organisations to assist in molbilising older persons to achieve representation at all levels.

The Patron of TAFU, Owekitiibwa Mulwanyammuli Semwogerere launched TAFU's new Befriending programme at the Imperial Royale Hotel, Kampala. The morning workshop resulted in more than 20 Ugandan participants volunteering their time to visit an isolated older person. TAFU will match the befriending volunteers with older persons who have been identified and will monitor and support the relationship.

The Daily Monitor Newspaper published an article based on some of TAFU’s research findings on the isolated older persons in Uganda. The research was possible through a partnership with Age Concern Devon through the International Federation on Ageing’s (IFA) Capacity Building Program.

The Aged Family Uganda (TAFU) received home care support equipment worth 2,816,000/= from the International Women Organisation (IWO) in Kampala. The equipment includes commode chairs, a walking flame, walking sticks, urinals, bed pans and the back rest facilities.
Receiving the equipments, Sarah Namirimu from TAFU said that the equipment will “assist TAFU’s community caregivers to perform their duties and maintain older person’s dignity and independence especially isolated women who cannot afford to buy the equipment”.
Thank you to IWO and the two officers, Ruth Ssali and Chetna Srivastava who delivered the equipments to TAFU.

TAFU welcomed members of Caritas Denmark who have previously funded TAFU to support orphaned grandchildren. Members had the opportunity to interview and video beneficiaries.

The Project Coordinator, Richard Semanda attended the Oxford’s Institute of Ageing’s Spring School at Oxford University "The Multi-Disciplinary Toolkit for Global Ageing Research" for emerging researchers from around the globe to explore individual and population ageing.
The toolkit also tackled topics such as demography, ageing brain, institutions and society, and older person’s immune system and infectious diseases.
