Volunteer Program
Volunteer caregiver program
TAFU was successful in obtaining funds from KBO
Netherlands in 2008 to develop a volunteer caregiver
project linking volunteers to isolated older persons. The
project is has been established in Wakiso district in the
Bulondo and Bakka villages with 10 volunteers from each
village caring for 2 persons each, visiting them twice a
week for an hour. Volunteers are trained in basic care of
older persons and in First Aid and are provided with a
First Aid kit. They are supported by a volunteer
coordinator who is provided with a bicycle and is
reimbursed for travel and expenses.
Volunteers find their work rewarding, giving a sense of
satisfaction of helping another person and in
demonstrating respect for elders. Volunteers also enjoy
the sense of belonging to the community of TAFU and are
proud of their new skills and knowledge.
The pilot project will be evaluated at the end of 2008.
TAFU is very keen to expand this program further. If you
are interested in supporting the project’s expansion
please contact us.
Befriending Program
In 2008 TAFU will also establish a befriending program.
The program will work in a similar way to a sponsorship
program. TAFU will identify older persons in need,
recruit them into the program, share their story and
needs and then link to a befriender. Volunteer
befrienders in Uganda can visit, provide companionship
and practical provisions. Befrienders outside Uganda can
provide funds for needed provisions – from basics such as
sugar, salt and bedding, providing equipment and access
to medications to repairing dilapidated houses.

Volunteer your expertise
TAFU welcomes international visitors who are interested
in learning more about ageing in Africa and who would
like to share ideas and information about care of older
persons.TAFU can arrange for visitors to present a talk
or conduct a training course for TAFU staff, volunteers
and members of other older persons organisations.
Training materials are always welcome.
TAFU also welcomes volunteers who want to share their
expertise in other areas outside of gerontology.
